Consortium

The Hospital Microbiome Project will act as a nucleus for a consortium consisting of Sloan grantees and new researchers who are interested in the microbiome of the hospital environment. With the existing working group that was developed to create the experimental outline and practical application of the UChicago hospital study acting as a seed organization we have reached out to additional researchers. We will engage with the proposed group via this website, email list, and an annual meeting (first two planned for Jan 2013 and Jan 2014) hosted at University of Chicago, where we will invite all consortium members and encourage additional participants (including representatives of funding agencies, and hospital agencies) to discuss existing research, future funding opportunities, proposed outreach projects, collaborative potential, and research outlines.

Through this nucleus, centered on the UChicago Hospital and Military Hospital studies, we will stimulate the development of an augmented field of scientific enquiry, specifically focused on the development of microbial ecology techniques and experimental analysis targeted to the microbiology of hospital environments. Dr. Jack Gilbert and Capt. Benjamin Kirkup will initially lead the forum, and will actively seek funding from other PIs, agencies and potential sponsors to continue the meetings annually to help inspire future research efforts, catalogue the developments of this field, and tie in these efforts to the existing microbiological investigations by the medical microbiology community.
